Join our Augustine Tutoring Family
Augustine Tutors are incredible people. They work for free. They are retired teachers, young parents and people dedicated to our community. Their hearts are fully open to those they tutor. No previous teaching or tutoring experience is required, only a desire to change the life of a child.
HOW TO BECOME AN AUGUSTINE TUTOR
1. Register for Training
You can contact the Augustine Director, Henri Brown, by calling (336) 723-4391 x517 or by e-mailing her at augproj@gmail.com. You can also download the registration form and simply mail it to us.
All Augustine tutors must also register as a volunteer through the Winston-Salem Forsyth County School System.
2. Participate in the Training Program
All Augustine tutors go through a two-week training program held annually at St. Paul's Episcopal Church.
The cost of this training course is $225 per trainee. This fee covers only the cost of books, materials and a small registration fee. All other costs of the training are covered by the Augustine Project and the generosity of our donors. Some scholarship funds are available. Please let the Director know if you need financial assistance.
Our tutors receive 60 hours of training before they are assigned an Augustine student. The two-week training class includes a practicum during which the trainee evaluates a student and then teaches five consecutive Orton-Gillingham practice lessons (using Wilson® materials) with the help of a master tutor.
The course is taught by a team of experienced trainers who present such topics as the definition and characteristics of dyslexia; the essential components of reading instruction; the history and principals of Orton-Gillingham; phonological awareness; the scope and sequence of Orton-Gillingham teaching via Wilson Reading System® materials (including sounds, syllable types and spelling rules); sight words; plus phonics games and activities.
3. Tutor Two Times Weekly
Tutoring usually takes place twice a week at the child's school during the school day. Each lesson lasts about 45 minutes. Tutors are asked to give back 60 hours of free tutoring after taking the Augustine training.
Tutors may borrow phonetically controlled readers, workbooks and reference materials from the Augustine library. The Project provides tutors with ongoing support and opportunities to share lesson-planning ideas. Also, the Director and Assistant Director are available to support and coach new and returning tutors both in group settings and individually.
